Tesla Model X leaking front air strut: reconditioning instead of replacing

A Model X came in with a leaking front air strut, one of the most common faults on the Model X and Model S. Here is why a leak does not always mean a new strut, and how we recondition them.

Three steps of an air strut reconditioning at MegaEV: strut parts stripped down on the bench, the front air struts removed from the car, and the new seals ready to fit

This Model X came to us with a leaking front air strut. It is one of the most common faults we see, on the Model X and the Model S alike, and it often ends with an expensive bill for parts that did not need replacing.

How a leaking air strut shows itself

Air suspension holds the car up on pressurised air instead of steel springs. When a strut starts to leak, the signs are usually easy to spot:

  • the car sits lower on one corner, especially after standing overnight
  • the suspension takes longer to rise when you get in
  • the compressor runs more often, as it tries to keep up with the leak

Left alone, a leak puts extra strain on the compressor and other parts, and a straightforward repair can turn into a more expensive one.

A leak does not always mean a new strut

An air strut combines two parts: the air spring, which holds the air, and the shock absorber, which controls the movement. In many cases, the leak comes from failed seals in the air spring, while the shock absorber is still mechanically sound.

When that is the case, replacing the whole strut is not the only option. Owners are often offered a choice between:

  • genuine Tesla struts, which are expensive
  • cheap aftermarket units, often of uncertain quality and with little real warranty

We offer a third option: reconditioning the air spring.

How we recondition an air strut

First we confirm the diagnosis, so we know the leak really is in the air spring and the shock absorber is healthy. Then the work is:

  • a full strip-down and inspection of the strut
  • replacement of the failed seals
  • correct reassembly and testing, so it holds pressure as it should

The result restores proper ride height control and comfort, at a fraction of the cost of new parts and without compromising reliability.

Diagnose first, then decide

Suspension faults deserve a proper diagnosis. Replacing a whole assembly is not always the required solution, and it is rarely the most economical one. You can read more about this on our air suspension refurbishment and repair service.

If your Tesla is dropping overnight or sitting lower on one side, send us a message with the model and year, and tell us which corner is affected.
