Signs of a drive unit problem
- a whine, hum or grinding noise that changes with speed
- a drivetrain warning on the screen
- coolant or oil leaks around the drive unit
- a car that simply does not feel right under power
What we do
- Inspection: we check the drive unit and its associated systems for wear, leaks, unusual operation or other faults.
- Fluid changes: routine maintenance that is easy to overlook.
- Coolant delete: a specialist repair for the large drive unit on rear-wheel-drive and Performance Model S cars, where coolant can get into the drive unit.
- Diagnosis and repair: of noises, warnings and faults, with the repair options explained clearly.
Coolant delete on the Model S
On some Model S large drive units, coolant can find its way into places it should not be. If the coolant delete has not been done on your rear-wheel-drive or Performance Model S, it is worth having the drive unit and speed sensor checked.
The job is not always straightforward. On one 2017 Model S, the coolant delete turned complicated when the motor's high-voltage cables were seized. We found the room to work and saved the drive unit, rather than turning it into a much larger repair.
Specialist knowledge for a specialist part
Drive unit work involves high-voltage systems and needs the right knowledge, tools and procedures. Our technicians hold IMI Level 2, 3 and 4 qualifications in electric and hybrid vehicles, and we use Tesla Toolbox 3 to diagnose drivetrain faults the way Tesla's own systems report them.
