Tesla Model X ‘ninja door’ repair: fixing the cause without a new wiring loom

A Model X came in with the classic ‘ninja door’ fault, where the front door swings open violently. Here is what causes it, why Tesla's official fix replaces the whole loom, and how we repaired it in a more targeted way.

Three stages of a Tesla Model X door repair at MegaEV: a new connector being wired on the bench, the old door motors on the workshop floor, and the repaired connector fitted inside the door

We had a Model X in with a classic ‘ninja door’ fault. If you own a Model X, you may have heard the name. It describes a door that, instead of opening smoothly, swings open violently the moment the handle is pulled.

What a ‘ninja door’ is

The front doors of a Model X are powered: a motor opens and closes them, and controls how fast they move. When that motor fails, the door loses its control and can fly open as soon as it is released. Apart from being alarming, that is a risk to anyone standing beside the car, and to the door itself.

The usual cause: water getting in

The root cause is usually water ingress, on more than one level at once:

  • the door motor itself lets moisture inside
  • at the same time, the motor's connector corrodes beyond repair

So a new motor on its own is not enough. If the connector on the wiring loom side is damaged, the fault will come back.

Tesla's official fix, and ours

Tesla's official repair is to replace the entire door wiring loom. That is costly, and the parts are often delayed.

Instead, we carried out a targeted repair:

  • replaced the failed door motor
  • repaired the loom-side connector, using the exact OEM-type connector, which we keep in stock
  • sealed the new motor at its joints, following Tesla's service bulletin, to stop water getting in again
  • carried out a final calibration with Tesla Toolbox
The old door motors and fittings removed from a white Tesla Model X and laid on the workshop floor
The old door motors, removed from the car.

The result

By repairing the loom instead of replacing it, we avoided unnecessary parts costs and delays, and the fix is permanent. The door now opens and closes smoothly and safely.

It is a good example of how a targeted repair, based on understanding why a part failed, can be better for the owner than the standard parts-swap approach.

If your Model X doors are behaving oddly, opening too fast, stopping halfway or showing a warning, send us a message and tell us which door is affected.
